Uniquely versatile vision platform

May 2011 Sensors & Transducers

Omron’s new system, vision is simple, flexible and crystal clear.

Omron’s new Xpectia-Lite vision system, the latest addition to the company’s already comprehensive range of vision products, provides a uniquely versatile vision platform that offers fast straightforward installation, simple set up and superior performance, even in challenging operating conditions.

Xpectia-Lite supports smart cameras from Omron’s proven FQ-series sensor range, which have powerful integrated light sources enabling them to capture crystal clear images without the need for additional illumination or optics. To meet the needs of even the most demanding inspection applications, it can also be used with high-resolution cameras up to 2 megapixels.

The vision controller offers real-colour sensing, high dynamic range imaging (HDR), polarisation filter and other powerful features that deliver reliable sensing in challenging conditions, even with targets that have irregular reflectance and in applications where ambient light conditions fluctuate over a wide range.

As an aid to fast and easy set up, the controller is pre-loaded with more than 50 image-processing, pre-processing and calculation functions. These include dimension measurement, pattern and contour searches, inspection of targets for blemishes or soiling, work piece counting and character recognition for date code verification and similar purposes. The controller can also be configured to accept items with variations in shape and printing quality, thereby avoiding false rejections.

The processing functions can be readily combined using easy-to-develop flow-chart programs that can incorporate conditional branches and loops. This convenient programming facility allows Xpectia-Lite to offer a high level of versatility for a compact vision sensor. In addition, configurations from other FQ series vision sensors can be imported, making it easy to cater for changing application requirements.

To ensure straightforward and seamless integration with modern production lines and machines, Xpectia-Lite incorporates Ethernet/IP network support as standard, as well as offering TCP/IP, serial and parallel interfaces. A network drive function is also provided which allows users to output and store images and measurements via a network. When used in conjunction with a large capacity hard drive, this function offers a convenient solution for long-term image logging.
