Contactless angle measurement

April 2011 Sensors & Transducers

As a sequel to the LI-series inductive linear displacement sensors, Turck presents a new angle sensor family that works on the same measuring principle and combines all the advantages of customary measuring systems into one solution. In the new RI-sensors, the position of the angle is no longer measured with a magnetic locator but by an inductive resonant circuit. This makes the sensor immune to magnetic fields such as those produced by large drives or welding machines.

The RI-sensors have a measurement range of 360° at an accuracy of 0,15% of the final value. Easy installation and safe operation are achieved by the separate construction of the sensor unit and locator, and by an offset compensation of ±4 mm. The locator can be mounted flexibly onto solid or hollow shafts. Contactless angle measurement results in high linearity as vibrations caused by the jolting of shafts are avoided. The sensor is adaptable on the output side and SSI-interfaces are also available.

With a high interference resistance, solid case and long mechanical lifespan, RI-sensors are suitable for numerous applications. Examples are the adjustment of rotor blades on wind turbines and the tracking of solar panels.
