With the wide acceptance of Wi-Fi and wireless Ethernet networks a whole new range of applications has been exposed in industry. The conversion of process signals into Modbus TCP/IP and Ethernet IP is easily achieved using the Acromag analogue or digital input/output modules. This data can then be transmitted wirelessly over long distances (typically 10 km) and either reconverted on the receiver side, or written directly to a PLC register and read by a scada system.
This methodology has proved itself in many applications, particularly remote water and sewerage treatment sites where it is vital for operators to know plant conditions, but the cost of cable installation is prohibitive. Redundant ring technology switches also allow for an Ethernet ring to be constructed wirelessly, further increasing the reliability of the system.
The Acromag modules are a 25 mm DIN Rail mount and can accept current, voltage, thermocouple and RTD as well as digital voltage inputs. The analogue I/O units are all 16 bit resolution and the digital units can accept 0-35 V DC. All the modules have embedded web browser configuration pages which allows for simple settings to be made and come with UL Class 1 Div2 groups ABCD certification as standard.
