Complete solutions for chemical metering

December 2010 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Demands of the chemical industry with regards to process safety and environmental protection are constantly increasing. Often, inflammable, toxic, precious, or fluids charged with solids need to be dosed. According to ProMinent Fluid Controls, traditional standard solenoid or motor driven pumps are limited in their ability by not being Ex protected for metering inflammable fluids or for operating within Ex areas. They are also not able to meter chemicals that contain solids due to little or no gap between the diaphragm or piston and the liquid end or packing. Lastly, traditional metering pumps normally have a series of valves that harbour small gaps or crevasses; these give chemicals a place ‘to hide’. On the other hand, ProMinents Orlita series metering pumps are specifically designed for the controlled addition of critical media in chemical process technology.

ProMinent has a specialised arm within the group that caters for process type metering or metering requiring specialised pumps and accessories. It reports that there is currently huge emphasis on green chemicals, wastage and alternative technologies. It can be very difficult for process engineers to sift through the massive amount of providers to identify those who can also design, support, install, train and commission sophisticated dosing and metering equipment. This is where ProMinent becomes a partner, with over 100 000 manufactured products it is able to offer and provide solutions that can:

* Accommodate green initiatives by providing pumps that have lower power requirements.

* Provide metering pumps that can be accurately controlled to within 0,5% thus saving chemicals.

* Design, provide and support alternative technologies to the traditional through the use of Ozone or UV technologies.

Not to forget standard commodity chemicals. These also require storage and metering; they are also increasing in cost and thus require the same considerations for power savings, accurate reliable metering and single sourced solutions. ProMinent South Africa has pre-built tank systems comprised of a 140 PE tank with level gradient, integrated electric stirrer, chemical suction with level switch, and the dosing pump mounted directly on the tank to provide a single sourced completely packaged solution. Savings accrue from accurate metering, lower power requirements from metering pumps and reliable long-term dosing.
