New piston diaphragm pumps

December 2010 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

sera’s Generation 5 – the safe answer to high counter pressure.

The new generation 5 piston diaphragm pumps of the series R 510.1 and R 511.1 deliver 65 l/h to 1900 l/h at pressures up to 220 bar with improved accuracy and ease of use. The operating range for the 510.1 is 65-1300 l/h at up to 200 bar and for the series 511.1 from 100-1900 l/h at up to 220 bar. These new piston diaphragm pumps qualify for a wide range of applications including the chemical industry with various combinations that make them suitable for many applications.

The newly designed stroke mechanism is the basis for this performance and incorporates variable eccentric drive design, which gives the following benefits:

* It enables a linear and precise stroke length setting and thus very precise metering even with large flow rates and high pressures.

* Due to the harmonic movement sequence even for partial stroke operation, these pumps produce significantly less pulsation than other metering pumps.

* As a result, the wear and the complexity for pulsation damping are minimised.

* Noise emission in comparison with simpler stroke mechanisms, particularly in the high flow rate and pressure range, is significantly reduced.

A variable eccentric drive is distinguished from a normal straight slider crank system by the eccentric being radially adjustable. As a result, the stroke length can be set precisely, reducing the force applied for adjustment and simultaneously increasing precision in operation. The stroke can be continuously adjusted from 0 to 100% using a hand wheel or an actuator and offers an overall repeat accuracy below 1%.

These piston diaphragm pumps also provide maximum safety. They are equipped with high quality material multilayer diaphragms for reliable diaphragm rupture detection. The structure of the diaphragm ensures that the area that comes into contact with the hydraulic piston remains protected even in the case of rupture. Additional safety is provided by the separation of the hydraulic section from the drive assembly.

The pump itself is protected by an internal compensating valve that ensures the optimum amount of hydraulic fluid in the chamber. An additional benefit is the limitation of overpressure whereby the valve opens if the pressure in the working area is too high and lets the hydraulic fluid flow into a storage tank. The compensating valve opens during the following suction stroke and the hydraulic fluid flows back again achieving a balanced state.

Environmental protection was very important during the development of the generation 5 pumps and provides the end user with real benefits with regards to operating and lifetime costs. Due to the benefits mentioned, the sera piston diaphragm pumps are suitable for use in a wide range of industrial applications. These range from metering tasks in the chemical and petrochemical industries to applications in food and pharmaceuticals. Each application type is tailored to the respective industry requirements by experienced sera personnel. This includes requirements such as special connectors, explosion proof rating and meeting standards such as API 675.
