Enhanced operator training software

December 2010 Operator Interfaces, Switches & Relays

Honeywell has announced key enhancements to its suite of training software used to help operators at industrial facilities run their plants with greater safety and efficiency. UniSim R400 includes new tools that allow industrial process manufacturers to certify their operators more easily on the processes used in their facilities. It also features new virtualised capabilities that allow operators to train from any location, and so reduce the overall cost of training.

To certify their operators, most companies typically create training courses and host them from their learning management systems (LMS), which outline curriculum and determine when trainees meet certification criteria. UniSim now provides a direct link to any LMS, allowing companies to offer hands-on learning exercises.

This type of training helps plants convey within weeks, operating knowledge that would normally come from many years of actual experience. Research shows interactive simulation tools can lead to a 75% knowledge retention rate, versus a 5% retention rate for lecture-based classes.

“Providing training tools to operators is only one part of the equation,” said Paul Brice, advanced solutions director for Honeywell Process Solutions. “To make the most of safe and efficient operations, manufacturers need to make sure that any training offered is truly being effective and improving operator skills. That means that they must make sure all operators are meeting stringent standards and the new tools provided by UniSim will help them take a big step in that direction.”

In addition to the new self-certification tools, UniSim’s virtual hosting capabilities allow plants to deploy courses easily on any work station. This helps operators to train via a direct Internet link to their LMS, even when they are outside their traditional training facilities. Simplifying and increasing the exposure to a broader student population significantly drives down the cost of training per student.

“Today’s operators face more pressure than ever and cannot afford to learn from mistakes while on the job,” Brice said. “UniSim is a proven tool for helping operators become more effective in handling difficult situations when running their plants. These new enhancements and features make it easier than ever to take advantage of those benefits.”
