Endress+Hauser's student open day

November 2010 News

Endress+Hauser recently hosted the Tshwane South Further Education & Training College’s (TSC) first ever student open-day. Ten electrical engineering students were invited to get a feel for the real-world working environment and what they can expect from their professional endeavours when they enter the industry in the future.

The students were officially welcomed by MD, Rob MacKenzie. In his welcome, Rob stated the importance of Endress+Hauser’s training programme, started a number of years ago to open career doors and identify employees of the future for the process instrumentation specialists. Every year the company selects students from various academic institutions to complete their practical training at its offices in Sandton, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

After the welcome, the product managers shared their know-how and experience. They covered the products and measuring principles in level, flow, temperature pressure and analytic technologies. Product manager for level, Lita Mpahlwa, is one of the protégés of Endress+Hauser’s training programme. In 2004, he was the first trainee to complete his practical training and subsequently worked his way through the ranks. He was rewarded for his hard work and determination recently by being promoted to his current position.

Next, projects manager Syd Thoresson took the students on a tour through the projects department where they were introduced to planning and project management. After lunch the service department got its turn. Etienne Abrahams gave an overview of the department’s offerings and procedures, which included the types of services illustrated by some photographs of these being carried out on site. He also included a short motivation for why the students should want to join Endress+Hauser, using his own experience as an example.

Career paths followed on the agenda. Fiona Seleke (project proposal engineer) and Mapula Lekota (internal sales) described their journey through the company trainee programme and into the sales department where they currently work. The day was concluded by the HR department who explained the qualities that companies look for when they select trainees. HR Director, Siphindile Madonsela, highlighted some of the do’s and don’ts for success, which should help the students to prosper in the future.

Endress+Hauser say it foresees hosting more of these events, confirming its commitment to producing capable and successful engineers.
