MESA SA annual conference

October 2010 News

This year’s MESA Southern Africa Conference will be held on 21 October at the Indaba Hotel and will host a number of interesting topics. Jan Snoeij from the Netherlands will present eco-efficiency in the context of ‘Metrics that matter’. This presentation will address one of the biggest challenges in manufacturing: to reduce costs while increasing sales volumes and at the same time promoting a greener image. Since consumers are not willing to pay more for green or sustainable products, Jan will share the secret to getting this done.

John Coetzee will tell how SAB Miller is searching for the Holy Grail of MES giving insight into how SAB Miller has tackled sustainable manufacturing by ‘Eating the elephant one bite at a time”. Find out how manufacturing beer is ‘The alchemy of converting water into liquid gold’.

Raven Mahabeer will tell of the lessons learnt from Aberdare Cable’s MES implementation recently, alluding to the technology selection criteria, project scope definition and critical success factors.

Mac Barnard will present how Cape Gate’s electric arc furnace MES system has assisted it with the measurement, control and optimisation of production, including aspects such as OEE, ladle tracking, refractory management, alarming and reporting.

Chris Mollison from Scheduling Solutions will review the pros and cons of positioning any scheduling function in the ERP or in the MES layer and how it is specifically catered for in the ISA 95 standard.

Shaun Tosen will reflect on a challenging journey which Sappi encountered when its reel and pallet labels were standardised across six mills, including brand, orientation, size, fonts, legibility, and functional value in the supply chain.

The conference will be held on 21 October 2010 (08:30–18:00) at the Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre, Fourways, Johannesburg. The cost per delegate is R 950 and vendor stands cost R3500 (includes free attendance for one delegate). Bookings can be made by contacting Claire Roswarne at +27 (0)86 107 2462 or e-mail: [email protected].
