Protecting the control network

The Eagle Tofino line of security switches from Hirschmann.

A new range of zone level security switches that protect control systems against network problems and cyber threats has been introduced by IAC.

The Hirschmann EAGLE Tofino line of security switches combines a rugged security appliance with a collection of software modules that together provide practical and effective industrial network security. The switches are simple to implement and do not require plant shutdowns.

Conventional control networks are not necessarily likely to come under threat from serious hackers, but are nevertheless vulnerable to simple day to day security problems. Poor network segmentation, unprotected entry points, ‘soft’ targets such as unpatched PCs and vulnerable PLCs, and human error, can all result in significant production losses and even safety issues.

The Tofino industrial security switch solution is a distributed security solution that implements cyber security protection in a control network quickly and cost effectively. The flexible architecture allows users to create security zones throughout the network to protect critical system components.

The Hirschmann switches are particularly suitable for incorporation into process control and scada systems to provide improved safety, network security and performance of industrial control systems. The new range helps users meet and exceed NERC CIP requirements and ANSI/ISA-99 Standards. They are designed to achieve optimal performance in the plant by avoiding the need for expensive downtime during installation, commissioning and maintenance.

Key benefits include:

* Easy configuration.

* No IT knowledge required.

* Extend cyber security down into the control network.

* Simplified regulatory and standards compliance.

The switches find application in most areas of process control, including: oil and gas custody transfer, safety systems, scada and shared access to remote telemetry data.

The EAGLE Tofino range incorporates a number of other network security related products including:

* The central management platform software.

* Firewalls.

* Secure asset management solutions.

* VPN solutions.

* Security appliances.
