Retro-reflective area sensor

August 2010 Sensors & Transducers

Photoelectric sensors are in the forefront of modern production automation. Their reliability impacts the entire system – from efficient day-to-day operation to product quality. With the Visolux brand, Pepperl+Fuchs offer one of the largest lines of modern photoelectric sensors on the market. This includes sensors for typical automation tasks like detection, recognition and positioning, to more application-specific sensors for, distance measurement, data transmission, and image processing.

Comparison of single-beam photoelectric sensor and retro-reflective area sensor

The use of standard photoelectric sensors to detect objects whose appearance occasionally differs due to certain characteristics often causes problems. More specifically, objects with varying front edges regularly overload devices with single-point detection characteristics. Previously, complex replacement assemblies comprising several photoelectric sensors or expensive light grids have often provided a suitable solution.

The new RLG28 retro-reflective area sensor operates with the same principle as the retro-reflective sensor, except it contains several transmitters and receivers in one enclosure, with a reflector positioned opposite, forming a detection area with a consistent width and height over the relevant sensing range.

The RLG28 retro-reflective area sensor has a 60 mm constant detection field and a resolution of 12 mm over a range of 0-4 m that allows the consistent detection of small objects within the entire detection area.

The RLG28 specialises in the reliable detection of object front edges such as different types of pallets, sacks, packaged or reflecting goods. The sensor is also suitable as an ejection control for falling objects, an overhang control, eg, by way of deformed blocks, and can also be used as a muting sensor.

The sensor is an ideal replacement for current standard products that do not fully satisfy requirements. Installed in standard 28 series photoelectric sensor housing, users can replace their existing 1-beam solution 1:1 without modifying the control concept. Areas of application include the material handling, packaging and automotive industries.
