High-spec PLC

July 2010 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Omron South Africa’s range of PLCs – the CJ2.

The CJ2 continues on from where the CJ1 started, bringing with it all the CJ1’s features, plus many more usually only associated with larger PLCs. The range offers a USB 2.0 programming port as standard, a serial port for programming or serial devices and a multifunctional Ethernet port.

The range starts with the CJ2H-CPU64-EIP, with a 50 000 step program capacity and a 128 000 word data memory capacity whilst top level CPUs have a 400 000 step program and 800 000 word data memory capacity; a high-speed EtherNet/IP port (100 Mbps) is also standard and the optional memory card (up to 512 MB) all combine to make this a powerful range of PLCs.

Programming the range is made simple with Omron’s CX-One software and programming languages include ladder logic, sequential function charts, structured text and instruction lists to maximise ease of use. EtherNet/IP, being an open network, also facilitates interoperability. On EtherNet/IP, information and control co-exist, data links are much faster and data capacity is greater.

The CJ2’s EtherNet/IP port can also be used for programming and monitoring purposes. As the PLC is powered up, the IP address is flashed across a two-digit seven segment display, taking the guess work out of finding its address; simply configure the IP address in the support software and connect.

The CJ2 series of CPUs are also 20 times faster than its predecessor, making the range ideally suited to applications requiring high-speed I/O processing or complex floating-point mathematical functionality, with basic instructions being executed in only 0,016 μs.

The series also has a tag name server to manage tag names and I/O addresses, enabling access from external devices using tag names without needing to know the respective I/O addresses. The PLC can itself also be named, and subsequently verified, to prevent incorrect connections.

The company says that the extended functionality actually works out more cost-effective than building up previously available systems to achieve the same level of functionality. All existing CJ1 cards can be used with the CPUs leading to a further saving in space. The features and functionality, combined with Omron’s internationally recognised reliability and world-wide availability, suggest that the CJ2 is going to be a valuable addition to the PLC range.
