Fire detection and suppression

July 2010 IS & Ex

Sperosens has been in the fire detection and suppression business for more than 21 years and specialises in the protection of conveyor belts and electrical sub-stations. The Speroblaze CAFF fire suppression system is designed to protect the drive and tail pulleys where 95% of the fire risk is located. The belt fire suppression system consists of a pressure vessel filled with an AFFF foam/water mixture which is pressurised by nitrogen, designed to comply with the NFPA and insurance specifications. These belt fire suppression systems are presently installed in many mines throughout the country.

The products have been developed over 22 years and are currently employed at over 40 installations around the country. Some features include:

* A full maintenance agreement to ensure optimal operation at all times.

* An expandable system to provide additional resources as this becomes necessary.

* Web-based early warning functions ensure that control resides with the responsible personnel who can then implement the appropriate operating procedures to manage any situation.

The system is designed to prevent fires before they spread, thus eliminating the need for vast amounts of extinguishing fluid and saving money.

The company says its workforce is able to assist from consulting and delivery, through project management, to after-sales service and maintenance. Consultation and/or assessments of belts, electrical substations, fuel bays, or environmental impact assessments can be undertaken to identify high risk areas and recommend how these risks should be mitigated. Where required, the designs of appropriate solutions are contracted and a professional CAD 3D design is built for each installation. These designs, once agreed upon, then form the basis for approval and installation.
