Compact absolute encoder

June 2010 Sensors & Transducers

The Hengstler AD34, available from Countapulse Controls, provides a resolution up to 17 bit single-turn. The AD34 complements the ACURO-DRIVE series and is appropriate for use within BLDC servo motors with small frame sizes. The mechanical design comprises two ball bearings and a flexible torque support. Suitable for use in applications with an operating temperature up to 120°C and 10 000 rpm continuous operation, this encoder has a 6 mm notched shaft and a mounting depth of 25 mm.

The unit incorporates an integrated diagnostic system which controls and regulates internal signals. Maximum motor uptime is achieved through the pre-warning signal and a code plausibility check ensures that the output data always represents the true position.

The digital OptoAsic technology enables the transition to a truly digital drive system. While some conventional absolute encoders still use analogue sine wave signals for the feedback of speed and position data, the Hengstler AD34 provides fully digital position data up to 17 bits over the BiSS interface with a variable clock rate of up to 10 MHz. Backward compatibility to most existing drives is realised through the variant with SSI interface, together with 2048 sine-cosine periods per revolution.
