Vibration, like temperature, is now a common parameter measured on process plants. Temperature has been used longer, probably because it was available first and was better understood than vibration analysis. However, it is now thought that vibration is the better measurement, because it gives earlier warnings and contains extra information that allows maintenance decisions on rotating machinery to be made more easily.
Reducing downtime and increasing machine productivity are essentials in today's industrial environment. Increasing the time between scheduled and predictive maintenance saves both time and the cost of spares. The answer is to keep a check on the mechanical health of the machine and keep it in operation as long and as efficiently as possible. The way to do this is via fixed and portable vibration monitoring.
With today’s technology vibration measurement has become simple to install and allows 2-wire installations to monitor vibration level. However, when a high limit is reached the system can also provide raw data to allow full analysis and fault finding on the rotating equipment. So, by installing vibration monitoring equipment or using portable units on a routine basis, the running time between shutdowns can be extended in a safe and cost effective manner.
