Local business delegation leads into Africa

May 2001 News

A business delegation sanctioned by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) visited Nigeria during January 2001, to establish business opportunities for South African companies as a Primary Market Research (PMR) initiative.

Trevor Howard-Tripp of Senet and Andreas Bohnsack of Electron held meetings in Abuja with the Honourable Ministers of Industry, Power and Steel, and Solid Mineral Development. Extensive meetings were also held with the Benue State Government who enthusiastically encouraged participation in their emerging economies.

Although Howard-Tripp and Bohnsack were a little apprehensive about visiting Nigeria, they were very well received throughout the visit and were often overwhelmed by their host's generosity. The trip was highlighted by an honorary function during which they were robed as chiefs.

"The reality of Nigeria is very different to my perceptions and I was continually surprised at their desire to make their democracy work," commented Bohnsack. Nigeria is a fledgling democracy in the process of privatising its state owned assets and is inviting investors to explore opportunities. South African companies, products and services are ideally placed, through their expertise, technology and 'African experience', to develop these opportunities.

Although no business was concluded during the visit, vast opportunities exist in the mining, paper manufacturing, electrification, water treatment, cement, processing plants and agriculture. Senet, a multidisciplinary engineering and project management company, and Electron, a turnkey electrical company have undertaken to explore these lucrative opportunities and are currently drafting proposals. Both Senet and Electron have successfully completed projects throughout Africa and Electron currently has twelve active contracts in Africa.

Electron has the facility to provide turnkey electrical services in-house, ranging from feasibility studies, engineering and project management through to switchboard manufacturing, PLC/SCADA systems, site installation and commissioning. In short, Electron takes ownership of the process and takes responsibility for the correct functioning of its equipment and services. This capability, coupled with competitive pricing and an understanding of applications in Africa, makes Electron a good choice. Electron, with its ISO 9002 certification, three manufacturing facilities in South Africa and 30 years of expertise, are committed to quality and service, positioning them to lead export initiatives into Africa.
