Millionth DSL port in record time
May 2001
News
On 27 April 2001, the Siemens production facility at Bruchsal shipped its one millionth DSL port. With DSL (digital subscriber line) customers can use existing telephone cables to gain extremely high-speed Internet access - up to 50 times faster than ISDN - and download graphics or music files within seconds. In February this year, to meet the explosive demand for DSL, Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) invested DM 100m in expanding its production capacities for broadband access technology in Bruchsal and opened a new plant.
The new plant has added a new dimension to Siemens' production capacities. Which is why Siemens was able to supply its one millionth DSL port in record time. "When Siemens started DSL production in October 1998, it produced 100 ports per week. Today we are making 100 000 in the same time span," explains Anthony Maher, member of the Executive Management at Siemens ICN. This massive increase in the production rate enables ICN to meet current and expected customer demand for broadband access technology in the long term. "We join with Siemens in welcoming this significant increase in production. It allows us to meet the high and constantly growing demand on the part of our customers for our broadband high-speed access port T-DSL," says Gerd Tenzer, member of the Managing Board of Deutsche Telekom.
