Power Ethernet functionality

February 2010 IT in Manufacturing

More ease and flexibility in the planning of data networks.

Belden has expanded the portfolio of its Hirschmann SPIDER products family with a low-cost switch including Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) functionality. The new switch was introduced at the recent SPS/IPC/DRIVES exhibition in Nürnberg.

The unmanaged SPIDER II 8TX PoE features an internal power supply which generates the 48 VDC PoE voltage directly from its 24 VDC supply, while at the same time providing the regulatory galvanic isolation. Network-compatible devices can be supplied by the switch with power straight through the data cable, thus eliminating the need for separate supply lines, allowing data networks to be planned with greater ease and flexibility.

Profitek sales director Fons de Leeuw says: “The four PoE ports of the switch are fully compatible with the IEEE 802.3af standard and can supply network-compatible end user devices such as IP phones, small hubs, cameras or WLAN access points with power up to 15 W.

“The switch has a DIN rail-mount metal housing to protection category IP30. It can be operated over a wide temperature range from -10 to +60°C, which makes it ideal for use in rugged industrial environments.”
