Local nut producer expands capacity

Systems & Automation Solutions chooses the Adroit solution for Golden Macadamias.

Nelspruit-based system integrator, Systems & Automation Solutions has provided an Adroit control system to help meet the monitoring needs of one of the biggest nut exporters in South Africa.

Golden Macadamias is a traditional company, with a unique approach that combines active involvement from leading macadamia farmers with a forward-thinking focus on quality and the consumer. As part of its ethos, all of the shareholders are high-quality macadamia farmers. The company has a state-of-the-art production facility with an annual capacity of 6000 tons dry-in-shell. Quality control is the heart of the cultivation and production process and customers are amongst the largest nut processors and users in the world. Over 90% of clients are in America or Europe, making it one of Africa’s most successful nut exporters.

Golden Macadamias approached the Systems & Automation Solutions team to replace the existing Rockwell RSView32 scada with an Adroit system capable of communicating with the various PLCs. The project entailed the re-engineering of the existing graphics as well as the engineering for an extra drying room that was added to accommodate the growing delivery of product from the farmers.

To control the plant a standalone scada system was installed to create a central point of area control for various PLC systems, including Allan Bradley and LS. Rob Marshall, MD of Systems & Automation Solutions comments: “We proposed Adroit as it is locally developed and widely supported in South Africa. We believe that this was the best solution we could implement to ensure that our client’s needs and requirements were met.”

Initially, the site had 32 drying bins, a cracking line, sorting line and two final drying rooms. It has grown systematically over the years and now has 114 drying bins, four cracking lines, a nut colour sorter and four final drying rooms. The nuts are dried in individual batches of four, eight and 16 tons in order to promote the efficient use of energy. The control system constantly monitors and adjusts the humidity and the temperature during drying, a specialised process which substantially increases the quality and the shelf life of the nuts.

Senior business development manager at Adroit, John Crain concludes: “We are continually impressed with the quality of work being delivered by our channel partners. Rob and his team are deeply passionate about what they do and it reflects in the quality of the systems they install for organisations like Golden Macadamias.”
