SAPICS joins MIT research project
February 2010
News
In an exciting development for the South African supply chain and operations profession, SAPICS (The Association for Operations Management of Southern Africa) has been invited to participate in a global research project being conducted by MIT (the Massachusetts Institute for Technology). IMPERIAL Logistics has sponsored the research.
“The survey is being conducted by MIT’s Centre for Transportation and Logistics, and focuses on ‘Supply Chain Risk Attitudes and Experiences,” explains SAPICS director Cobus Rossouw. “Information is being collected in six different regions of the world, and the goal of MIT is to understand if regional and cultural differences affect how people think about and manage supply chain risks.”
Rossouw says SAPICS is extremely proud to have been selected to partner with MIT for this research. It reflects the association’s growing reputation as Africa’s leading supply chain resource, and its strong ties to the global supply chain community.
A further benefit of the survey, he notes, is that it is practical, and puts supply chain issues into a context that even those working outside the profession can understand and relate to. “Risk management is widely understood, and does not just affect the supply chain. This survey is set to provide South African business in general with a clearer understanding of the very broad area that supply chain encompasses.”
SAPICS plans to distribute the survey as widely as possible. It is entirely electronic, Rossouw explains, and the average time to complete it is only 12 minutes.
