New dual-function RTD transmitter for hazardous areas.

Jan 2000 IS & Ex

Turck now produces a new PT 100 RTD transmitter with intrinsically safe input circuits. The multimodul MK32 is a dual-function transmitter. It replaces the transmitter and barrier previously required for isolating the temperature-dependent signal in a hazardous location and converting it into linear 0/4 to 20 mA current output for control equipment in a nonhazardous location. Handling both of these functions with one component saves space and expense.

The four standard, field-selectable temperature ranges of the MK32 transmitter are set using two convenient switches on the front cover. Other temperature measuring ranges between -200 and +800°C can be programmed at the factory. Each transmitter can have up to four special ranges assigned to it.

The MK32 also features a high/low alarm setpoint and input circuit monitoring for wire-break and short circuit. When input monitoring is activated, a switch determines whether the output during a fault will be 0 or 20 mA and the fault LED illuminates red.

When input circuit monitoring is deactivated, the output signal follows the direction of the input signal: 0 mA for wire-break or 20 mA for short circuit. A green LED indicates power-on status.

The intrinsically safe input circuits of the MK32 are PT 100 RTD (3 or 4-wire), with a resistance of <200 y per wire and RTD excitation current of approximately 250 µA.

The MK32 provides an advanced level of safety in a simple and easy-to-wire, DIN-rail mountable package, featuring full-size terminals that are easy to access and wire using a standard screwdriver.
