Ratio pyrometers for hot metal processing applications.
Measurement technology company Micro-Epsilon has extended its range of temperature sensors with a new ratio pyrometer. This non-contact temperature sensor is dependent on the emissivity ratio, but not on the absolute emissivity. The sensor measures by using two short wavelengths close to each other and forms a ratio from these. The emissivity of the target is therefore no longer required for measurements. Even when the IR radiation is obscured up to 95% by steam or smoke, an accurate measurement is possible with this method. The sensor provides a measuring range of 700 to 1800°C, at a maximum ambient temperature of 250°C without cooling, and is primarily used in metal processing applications.
The thermoMETER CT ratio sensor is connected to the electronics and evaluation unit via an optic fibre. Electromagnetic radiation thus does not influence the sensor. A sighting laser which enables constant mapping of the real measuring spot size is projected onto the target by the lens of the sensor. The standard focus of the lens is at a distance of 60 mm. By using an additional, variable focussing lens, the user can set the focus point between 65 and 300 mm. The pyrometer can be used as a standard single-channel IR sensor or as a ratio pyrometer. The electronics and evaluation unit allows for connection to Profibus, Ethernet, USB, RS232 or RS485.

Temperature Measurement
For successful paint cure, irrespective of the paint chemistry being used, there is a critical need to measure and control the temperature of the car body as it travels through the oven. Today, paint ovens are controlled in a sophisticated fashion via thermocouples located in each zone to give constant feedback on the ambient temperature.
