PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Integrated but separate

July 2009 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Process control and plant safety in a single system.

ABB’s System 800xA HI (high integrity) has taken plant automation onto a new and pioneering level by seamlessly integrating two previously independent automation platforms – safety and process control – into a single (yet functionally separate) system.

The system offers users the flexibility to either combine control and safety functions in the same controller, or to keep the functions separate but within the same integrated network.

This revolutionary ‘same yet separate’ architecture protects personnel, plant processes and the environment while providing significant improvements in operating efficiency, and meeting the highest industry safety standards.

The conventional alternative to ABB’s integrated solution requires the customer to invest in two separate and independent systems – a basic distributed control system and a separate safety instrumented system.

Full integration of the safety and process control systems through System 800xA HI means that all data associated with the safety instrumented system is available to the process control system, and vice versa.

Engineering is simplified through the use of common software tools and the common System 800xA architecture. Significant savings are achieved by sharing costly field equipment and wiring, and from using common (instead of separate) configuration tools, communications networks, spare parts, maintenance, training, service and upgrades.

System 800xA HI is certified by TÜV to meet the requirements of SIL3 (safety integrity level) as defined by the international standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.

ABB has delivered more than 600 safety systems to process industries in about 55 countries, and is a world leading supplier of distributed control systems to most process industries, including oil and gas, mining and metals, cement and glass, and pulp and paper.
