Adroit Technologies sponsors DUT

July 2009 Training & Education

The shortage of skilled engineers is a concern shared by tertiary institutions and solution providers alike. Adroit, in an effort to support these institutions, believes in the idea of skilling future engineers by providing them with the tools they will have to use when entering the engineering world after their studies. Its latest donation was made to the Durban University of Technology.

The DUT has now been sponsored with two scada control systems. These systems will form an integral part of many student’s projects on a BTech level and some of the students will be using the control system for their MTech degrees. The first system has already been used in the instrumentation laboratories as part of the curriculum. Recently, 30 PLCs were purchased to establish a PLC laboratory with the scada system used to complement them. Gary J. van Vuuren and two other lecturers have been the driving force behind the initiative. As part of the Adroit sponsorship, all these lecturers went on an introductory training course to ensure their understanding of the product.

The second system was donated two months ago for use on the Indlebe Radio Telescope project (see http://indlebe.dut.ac.za). The plan is to control all aspects of the telescope using the scada package, for example: positioning of the primary reflector; weather station; GPS; web camera, web server etc. One of the MTech students will be managing this project and it should be implemented before the end of this year. Gary notes: “We see the value in training on next generation tools which are extensively used in industry and ensuring that all our students are able to hit the ground running when they are unleashed into the real world of engineering and manufacturing.”

Adroit has donated many scada systems to a variety of institutions in order to help ensure that these institutions of learning are equipping our future engineers with the skill-sets required in a competitive market. Dave Wibberley, MD of Adroit, comments: “Projects like these help us educate young engineers in the diversity a scada application can offer. In so doing we ensure that they can make better decisions about software and control system applications in the future.”

Adroit seeks co-operation with relevant institutions as part of its campaign to skill for the future.
