Ultrasonic sensor for hard-to-access applications

April 2001 Sensors & Transducers

Banner Engineering Corporation is offering the Q45UR Flat-Pak remote ultrasonic sensor, featuring an ultra-compact, rectangular remote sensing head that delivers precision performance to limited-space applications and difficult environments. Designed for use with Banner Q45UR sensors, the new remote head fits and functions where barrel-style heads cannot. Measuring 27,5 mm2, with a height of only 12 mm, it is less than half the size of a standard 9 V battery.

Especially significant, the advanced design of the diminutive, durable sensing head includes integral thermistors that compensate for temperature variations to assure superior accuracy at the sensing point. Housed in rugged plastic, the Flat-Pak head is rated IEC IP65, and operates in temperatures from -25°C to +70°C. An integral 2 m cable allows quick and easy connection with Q45UR ultrasonic controllers.

The sensor is good for precision sensing in confined areas, and available in both switched output (discrete) and analog models for maximum application compatibility. Sensing ranges and custom sensing windows are programmed with the push of a button. To program a sensing window of 1, 2, 3 or 4 mm, Q45UR users simply teach the Q45UR the mid-point of the window, and adjust window size using the sensor's DIP switches. Windows larger than 5 mm (0,2") can be programmed by teaching the desired window limits to the Q45UR one at a time, the same manner used with the standard Q45U.

Analog Q45UR sensors, ideal for gauging and similar inspection applications, allow users to define a sensing window from 5 to 200 mm. Analog models provide 0,1 to 0,5 mm resolution within a 50 to 250 mm range, and feature user-selectable response modes and speeds.

Three LEDs featured on the sensors provide continuous indication of programming and operating status. The green LED indicates power on, and flashes to indicate output overloaded. The red LED flashes in direct proportion to the received signal strength within the sensing window. A yellow LED indicates the target is in the operating window limits (outputs conducting). Q45UR sensors also feature a highly visible, red, moving dot target indicator that simplifies set-up and provides a constant display of sensor performance.

The design includes temperature compensation circuitry and digital filtering for immunity to electrical noise. Integral circuitry protects against transient voltages and reverse polarity.

Q45UR sensors feature a moulded VALOX thermoplastic housing with transparent LEXAN top cover and stainless steel hardware. They are rated IEC IP67, and are available with a 2 m or 9 m attached cable; or a choice of 5-pin, Mini or Euro-style, quick-disconnect fitting.
