Programmable indicators - one model for many applications

April 2001 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Gefran has designed features into the model 40 that allow the user full flexibility in setting the instrument up for virtually any alarm and monitoring requirement in the factory. User programming can be done from a PC.

Input versatility

Programmable inputs provide for thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, linear inputs for mA current and voltage, strain gauge, frequency, rpm, volts and amperes. For non-standard inputs a 32-segment custom linearisation can be entered.

Operator interface

A programmable digital input allows zeroing, Flash (externally triggered reading), max peak, min peak, peak-to-peak and reset of latched relay operation.

The front panel buttons are equally programmable for the above functions as well as operating any one of the three alarm relays directly.

Input filters

To average multiple readings and to stabilise fluctuating display, the Gefran 40 offers various input filtering options.

Speed vs resolution is programmable

The 40 series can run anywhere between 15 and 120 ms cycle time. This programmable function allows the user to program the response time to either achieve highest resolution (13 bit, 8000 points or 0,0125%) or fastest speed (11 bit or 2000 points, 0,05%). Speed is important when monitoring fast changing inputs like pressure, load or vibration.

Outputs are programmable

Up to three relay outputs can be programmed for high or low alarm functions, absolute or symmetrical alarm in direct or inverse mode of operation. Operation can be direct or latched.

For straingauge/loadcell/pressure application the indicator facilitates easy calibration of an 80% load simulation (for six-wire devices).

For each output an on/off switching delay between 0 s and 99 min can be specified.

Displays

Bright four-digit plus sign LED display is standard, allowing indication from -1999 to 9999.

Decimal point is freely selectable to suit the application. Each indicator is supplied with a set of labels to indicate the correct engineering units.

On-board loop and excitation power supply

The Gefran 40 features on-board power supply output of 1, 5, 10, 15 or 24 V d.c. at 50 mA, sufficient to drive most types of process transducers, loadcells and potentiometers.

Re-transmission output

A 4-20 mA programmable output is available to echo the process input or, in weighing type applications, the weight of a product (after zeroing).

Serial programming port

Windows software allows users to easily set the Gefran 40 up from a personal computer or from the front panel keys.
