Sensors & Transducers

Bare your teeth

April 2009 Sensors & Transducers

Baumer has designed a range of Hall sensors that are particularly well-suited for scanning gears and racks made of ferromagnetic materials. High resolution allows them to reliably detect gear teeth starting at module level 1.

Their maximum switching frequency is 20 kHz, making them up to five times faster than inductive sensors employed for similar applications. Thanks to two phase-shifted signals, Hall sensors are capable of detecting rotational direction or direction of travel, offering themselves as replacements for incremental encoders. Since, in contrast to encoders, they contain no ball bearings or other moving parts, the sensors are subject to practically no wear, even at high rotational speeds. Keyways at either housing end allow them to be easily adjusted to the gearing being scanned.

The units themselves are vibration and shock resistant. The M12 1.4305 stainless steel full metal jacket corresponds to protection class IP68 with an operating temperature range of -40 to +120°C. Hall sensors are designed for employment in harsh industrial environments subject to extreme dust and oil contamination. Examples of such applications include textile, tobacco and cement processing as well as agricultural equipment.
