Voith expands in Africa

March 2009 News

Voith Turbo has a well-established presence on the African continent with Ghana serving as the springboard for the opening of the first Voith branch in Accra.

“We have successfully served the Ghanaian market through our agents, Multi-Tech Services for close on five years and the establishment of our branch was a natural progression and part of enlarging our African footprint,” says Lester Fine, manager, Voith Turbo Trading Division. “However, we will still continue our strong business relationship with Multi-Tech who recently secured the first order for the supply of 21 Grindex dewatering pumps for Ghana Water.”

Fine adds that Multi-Tech will continue to concentrate mainly on mining applications while the Voith branch will concentrate on introducing the company’s wide range of products to a more diverse range of industries.

According to Fine, Voith enjoys a large installed base of equipment in this expanding mining region, with particular success in open cast gold mines. Voith turbo couplings are used in a number of varied mining and industrial applications including: mills, crushers and conveyors.

WAMPEX (West African International Mining & Power Conference & Exhibition) is one of the most prestigious exhibitions in Africa and took place in Ghana in 2008. The three-day exhibition and conference was attended by some 76 regional mining operators, 26 representing South African mining companies.

“This was Voith’s fifth WAMPEX,” explains Fine. “And, as we are determined to continue expanding our presence in Western Africa, this exhibition is the ideal platform for creating awareness of our product range, the latest technology, service and not least, for meeting, greeting and supporting our customers.

“We have identified Nigeria as an important component of our West African drive, and we recently established a Voith branch office in Lagos with trained employees to assist customers in this region”.

In conclusion, Fine says that the next focus will be East Africa. “We will identify a country in this region to be the third country where we will establish a branch in 2009.”
