Prevent time lost accidents.
Environmental and monitoring specialists, Sperosens, have launched a new product to authorise machine activation.
The ACTSAFE was designed as a direct result of the unacceptably high number of machinery related incidents in all industry sectors. It is unique, user friendly, cost effective and can be easily installed in various machines. The system is designed to prevent machine actuation prior to receiving confirmation from the operators that they comply with the health, safety and maintenance requirements for operation of equipment.
This precautionary measure reduces management’s risk of the use of equipment by unauthorised and under trained staff. The event recording capability has been designed for reference in the case of legal proceedings resulting from injuries where the employee was at fault.
Purpose
* Limits machine activation to authorised operators.
* Logs all machine activations detail for later review.
* Reminds operator of applicable safety rules and hazards.
* Shares the safety responsibility between management and operators.
System components
ActSafe machine controller
The unit is mounted on the machine to be controlled for the purpose of operator validation through tag identification and a set of interactive YES/NO questions that must be answered correctly before the machine can be activated.
ActSafe depot controller
This is the base station from which operator tags are activated and deactivated and activation events performed by the machine controller are recorded.
ActSafe server
The server is responsible for control of the ActSafe software and database updates based on information received from the depot and machine controllers. It is also the mechanism for creating new operators, machines, tags and the generation of reports.
Principle of operation
Once the operators' tag credibility has been validated they are required to answer a number of questions of the following types:
* Maintenance questions (up to 20), only presented for first activation of shift.
* Safety questions (up to 20), presented for all activations.
For every presentation the order of questions in the list is randomly shuffled to prevent the operator from learning the sequence of questions. Only YES and NO answers are used, with questions programmable to have either YES or NO correct.
Data-logging
The system provides realtime recording of events such as: operator name; operator type; machine identification; activation start/finish (date and time); safety question list and activation failure codes. The machine controller has memory to cater for approximately six months of history, while the operator tags are capable of recording the summaries from five machines per shift.
Benefits
* Operators are reminded of safety issues every time the machine is activated.
* Management can evaluate operators based on activation results.
* Operator utilisation can be calculated from activation data.
* Machine utilisation can be calculated from activation data.
* Machine maintenance can be pro-actively managed.
Applications
Typical applications are found in the operation of vehicles and machinery in the mining, motor, dairy, petrochemical and paper and pulp industries. The units are also suitable for use in access control applications.
