Imfuyo drains Gautrain's tunnels

November 2008 News

Bombela Concession Company holds the 20-year concession to design, build and operate the Gautrain rapid rail link. The tender for the supply and service of pumps and ancillary equipment has been awarded to Imfuyo Projects, established in 2003 as a supplier of high technology engineering products.

The company will be supplying new 5th generation pumps manufactured by Grindex, a large supplier of submersible drainage pumps globally. The Grindex 5th generation heavy-duty range, comprising 12 units with output from 1–57 kW, offers optimum performance and reliable operation in the tunnelling, construction, mining and quarrying industries.

According to Imfuyo managing director, David Keebine, the quality of the Grindex pump range is pivotal to this major rail project due to the extreme ruggedness and reliability of the equipment. “Bombela placed the first order for eight pumps in January 2007, calling for delivery throughout the year and continuing into 2008 as expansion takes place and additional pumps are needed,” explains Keebine.

Fifty Grindex Minex-Matador heavy duty pumps are dewatering 1,7 km of tunnels in the Marlboro, Mushroom Farm Park, Sandton, Rosebank and Park Station areas. The approximately seven working sites present challenging environments and the pumps need constant repair and refurbishment in order to function optimally.

“We aim for a one week turnaround time and so far we have repaired in excess of 100 pumps – on time. To date we have also met the delivery demands for more than 80 new pumps to Bombela,” adds David. “Bombela has expressed satisfaction with the reliability of the Grindex pumps as well as with the excellent service and support of the Imfuyo team.”
