Intelligent sensor management

October 2008 Sensors & Transducers

Mettler Toledo’s innovative digital intelligent sensor management (ISM) concept makes it easier to operate process analytical systems from initial installation to maintenance, right through to sensor exchange. Measurement equipment with ISM technology significantly reduces the maintenance costs of loops, while increasing the safety of the production process.

Digital ISM sensors are equipped with an integrated chip in the sensor head that stores all relevant sensor parameters and algorithms for enhanced sensor diagnostics, providing the user with real-time sensor status data, for continuous performance monitoring and early fault detection.

The plug and measure function allows for simple installation and configuarion. When connecting the sensor to a transmitter, the sensor information is automatically detected, and the system parameterises itself. The modular M700 transmitter when used with the digital sensors allows integration of up to three modules for pH/redox, oxygen, and conductivity. The system is backward- and forward-compatible, meaning that transmitters with ISM functionality can also handle conventional analog sensors.

Sensors are equipped with a K8S connector, which has IP68 protection and is therefore ideally suited for harsh, humid environments and industrial applications. Data transfer takes place via a coaxial cable, which can also be used to cover long distances between the sensor and transmitter, due to the low impedance of the signal.

The iSense Asset Suite software ensures maximum performance of ISM sensors. iSense, provides on-line diagnostics information to schedule sensor maintenance or replacement. Sensors can be calibrated in the laboratory and the adaptive calibration timer adapts the calibration interval according to sensor wear. The ISM system reduces the installation, maintenance, and calibration effort of the digital sensors to a minimum, thereby improving process reliability, productivity, and system availability.
