Cinema has advanced beyond an audio visual experience to include smell, movement and touch. This evolution, called 4D cinema, is the future of motion picture entertainment and the result of a combination of technologies, primarily pneumatics.
4D cinema is yet another example of the versatility of pneumatic technology
The heart of 4D cinema is the seat, which vibrates and moves in unison with the onscreen action. Smells can be released from an advanced perfume system and tactile sensations, such as a breath of air down the back of the neck or a touch on the leg are possible via air jets and versatile appendages.
Developers at Kraftwerk Living Technologies, a leading European entertainment technology solutions provider, found that the biggest challenge in creating these sophisticated seats was to acquire the optimum pneumatic drive technology. The drives had to be small enough to fit in the seats, yet still able to generate sufficiently high forces.
Festo, a global leader in automation technology, provided the ideal drive solution with its state-of-the-art and diverse range of automation devices. The two key components supplied are the Bellows Cylinder EB and the Fast-switching Valve MH.
“As well as the extremely wide product range, we were attracted by the factors of product quality and the Festo global sales and support network,” says Christian Hofer, CEO of Kraftwerk.
