Flow Measurement & Control

Combined vortex flowmeters

September 2008 Flow Measurement & Control

The new Sitrans FX300 vortex flowmeter series of the Siemens Industry Automation Division is equipped with a pressure sensor and a temperature sensor. By combining these in one unit, the vortex principle is used to measure the temperature, pressure and flow of steam, gases and liquids. The new all-in-one-solution series is thus suitable for a wide range of applications in the oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical, food and beverage and energy generation industries. With the new added Sitrans FX flowmeters Siemens now offers technologies for all flow applications in process automation.

The FX300 operates on the vortex measuring principle. This involves detecting the frequency at which alternating vortices are shed from a buff body hit by the medium. The vortices create a force on a sensor wing that moves in proportion to the volume of flow. A sensor with a dual piezoelectric crystal mounted in the wing detects the oscillations precisely and transmits this information to the FX electronics for analysis.

The new two-wire flowmeters with Hart communication are specially designed for applications requiring reliable flow measurement independent of pressure, temperature, viscosity and density. These applications include the measurement of steam and saturated steam, monitoring of steam boilers, control of compressor outputs, consumption measurement in compressed air systems, measurement of industrial gases, burner consumption measurement, and SIP and CIP processes in the food and beverages industry or pharmaceuticals industry.

The Sitrans FX300 flowmeters are characterised by high accuracy and reliability. For example, the sensor is fully welded and does not require wear-prone internal gaskets. The operating temperature ranges from minus 40 to plus 240°C. In the case of steam and gas with flow rates of 2 to 80 metres/second, the accuracy is 1,0%, and in the case of liquids flowing at rates between 0,4 and 10 metres/second, it is 0,75%. The units are available in diameter ranges from DN15 to DN300.
