DDC - direct digital controls

June 2008 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

DDC systems with fixed functions enable quick and easy planning and implementation of traditional tasks in building automation. Standards can be used to gain an overview of complex solutions according to documented rules and long-term availability of the equipment can be ensured cost effectively. Based on the worldwide IEC 61131-3 standard, the solution can be adapted perfectly to requirements using preconfigured, tested and documented function modules. High levels of standardisation are achievable with minimum programming workload.

For all Phoenix Contact controllers that are used in building automation as DDC controllers, the project engineer has access to easy-to-use automation software (PC Worx). The software supports the programming languages defined in IEC 61131-3. Dock-able and undock-able work areas, as well as configurable task bars can be easily adapted to user requirements resulting in increased engineering efficiency.

The device catalogue provides a clear hierarchy of all components that can be included in the hardware configuration. The Building Automation Control Library (BACL) function library supports heating, ventilation and airconditioning regulation (HVAC) applications, as well as individual room regulation and lighting control.

The BACL catalogue contains all the functions for the basic user-defined data types. It is a prerequisite for use with the BACL function library, which is divided into catalogues on an application-oriented basis. Typical applications supported include:

* HVAC.

* Digital addressable lighting interface (DALI).

* Wireless room control devices.

When function libraries are used in freely-programmable DDC controllers, it becomes possible to efficiently plan, create and maintain complex regulatory and control tasks in building management applications. All BACL function modules have a universal communication interface. This means that the exchange of data and alarms with the visualisation or control system can be planned for via a single OPC connection. The controllers can be programmed and configured consistently and centrally via an Ethernet based system.
