In addition to a comprehensive process instrumentation range, Endress+Hauser offers a host of services to complement its offering, including consulting.
“As industry managers, we offer our expertise and advice to clients in a number of applications,” says Johan van Jaarsveldt, industry manager – Oil and Gas. “Obviously this takes us to client sites to scope requirements and determine which product or solution best suits their needs. However, not all applications are easily accessible or located on a plant.”
Van Jaarsveldt recently consulted to a petrochemical client and was asked to investigate the application of Endress+Hauser’s level products for interface detection between water and crude oil. The actual job site was a buoy almost 300 kilometres west of the African coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The buoy, used as a cyclone separator, removes water and sand from the crude oil before loading onto a supertanker. The living quarters are housed within the double wall of the buoy, the core being the cyclone.
A challenging site to visit
“I remained on the buoy for a few days and my examination of the site and its requirements proved that the new Endress+Hauser Liquicap M FMI51 capacitance interface detection probe was ideal for the application,” says Van Jaarsveldt.
The FMI capacitance probe offers continuous measurement that is independent of the product properties. The device is easy to commission, has a wide range of certificates and approvals, and is simple to maintain with no calibration necessary for media with a conductivity of 100 μS/cm and higher.
Van Jaarsveldt notes that the Liquicap M fulfils safety requirements for the industry, and includes safety functions up to SIL 2, and explosion protection. “The probe is ideal from a safety and performance point of view, and suits the requirements on the buoy.”

We need to challenge the stigma attached to artisanal and technical careers, and we also need a mindset shift supported by the schooling system so that young people understand future career pathways, choose subjects accordingly, and recognise that artisanal and technical skills carry equal value in a modern economy.
