Wonderware integrates Echelon technology

April 2008 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Echelon, a leading provider of networking technology, has worked in conjunction with Munich Software in Germany to develop a technology interface that enables the Wonderware and Echelon applications to cooperate in addressing energy conservation management activities across a wide range of commercial and industrial facilities.

The integration of i.LON SmartServer with the Wonderware System Platform 3.0 delivers a single software platform for realtime operations management functions. It enables customers to achieve energy savings, improved safety and reduced maintenance costs.

“Energy management is important in every industry and is particularly relevant in South Africa at the moment,” says Justin Tweedie, MD of Wonderware Southern Africa, a member of the EOH group of companies. “The pairing of Echelon’s leading control products with Wonderware’s user-friendly supervisory software solutions will simplify energy management for end-users. It has never been so quick and easy to create robust control networks for improved efficiency and productivity in industries such as facilities management, building automation, retail and convenience stores and public venues.”

The iLON SmartServer integration package from Munich Software significantly optimises the development process of supervisory applications for use with the product. It supports installation and remote deployment while enabling users to leverage the wide range of features of the Wonderware System Platform 3.0 software.

“We are pleased to work with Munich Software and Wonderware to further expand LonWorks networks and energy management in the control networking market,” said Anders Axelsson, Echelon’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Wonderware’s expertise in the supervisory software market, the introduction of System Platform 3.0 and the position of i.LON in the energy management market are a powerful combination. Building owners, facility managers, industrial plant operators, retail chains and city personnel will all find the solution easy to use and quick to install.”

The Wonderware System Platform 3.0 offers a consistent and strategic software platform that works on top of virtually any existing system and is built on the industry standards-based ArchestrA realtime, service-oriented architecture technology.

“Building control networks have historically been complex to install and integrate, making them difficult and time-consuming for most end-users,” said Michael Hädrich, founder of Munich Software. “By providing outstanding integration between two of the industry’s leading products, the company expects to see a marked increase in the adoption of these types of solutions.”

About Echelon

Echelon is a pioneer and world leader in distributed control networking technology for automation systems. Companies use their products and solutions in virtually every type of automation application.

Leading manufacturers, system integrators and network providers around the world rely on Echelon’s technology to expand service offerings, increase customer satisfaction, reduce costs, and achieve higher profits. In fact, in the time it takes to read this sentence, millions of Echelon-enabled smart devices will automatically monitor themselves, respond to their environment, communicate with each other, and report to network control centres. Systems based on Echelon’s technology provide business insight, drive performance and deliver results.
