Automation platform for plastics production

March 2008 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Honeywell has released MXProLine Foundation, a pre-configured version of the company's MXProLine automation system for the plastics, film and non-woven fabrics industries. The system features a robust scanning measurement and process control platform. Designed to minimise plant commissioning effort and risk, has made the installation process safer and more efficient.

The product design allows original equipment manufacturers and plant engineers to install the system at their own facilities, eliminating the need for a gauging expert. The fully tested system features easy-to-use setup displays, calibration utilities and single-variable control tuning. It also features higher scan speeds, faster sensors and model-based predictive control algorithms to increase product specification rates, which can reduce plant start-up time by 7 to 15%.

"The scanning and sensor enhancements provide even more accurate measurement and tighter process control," said Jason Urso, director of marketing for Honeywell Process Solutions. "We have made the system implementation process as easy as possible for plastics and fabric makers while helping them ensure the highest product quality and improve their overall business performance."

The rapid scan speeds and the enhanced sensor response allow plants to realise material savings by reductions in product variability. As a result, plants save raw materials, reduce off-spec production and decrease waste and defective material that would later be scrapped or reworked.

Information is presented to operators in an easy-to-understand format that helps them make quick and effective decisions about product quality, production rates, product classification and raw material supply. The system also improves equipment reliability through online diagnostics, intuitive calibration and operational status indicators that enhance preventative and corrective maintenance. MxProLine Foundation is built on the Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) platform, allowing the seamless integration of additional distributed controls, advanced controls and safety applications.
