Sitrans LR460 is the new continuous radar level measurement transmitter from Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D). The unit operates at 24 GHz utilising frequency-modulated continuous wave radar technology and intelligent echo processing. Sitrans LR460 is designed for difficult solids applications, including those with extreme dust, high temperatures and long ranges up to 100 m. Virtually any solid medium can be measured, including cement powder, fly-ash, coal, gypsum, flour, grain, aggregates and plastics.
The high gain antenna and signal processing software ensure reliable operation even when spurious signal reflections are encountered in dusty environments
Intense dust in the silo atmosphere does not attenuate the radar signal, which uses electromagnetic waves travelling at the velocity of light to measure the distance to the material surface. The sensor incorporates new process intelligence advanced echo-processing software and redesigned high frequency/high gain electronics. This has enabled reliable level measurement in difficult applications utilising the benefit of non-contact technology. After initial setup, the built-in process intelligence ensures automatic response to changing material conditions and physical silo features such as fixed obstructions or product build-up.
The newly developed low loss antenna with improved gain increases the signal-to-noise ratio. This allows detection of very low dielectric constant materials over long ranges. Reliable measurement is possible with the space-saving horn antenna, no large diameter parabolic antenna is required.
The built-in quick-start wizard ensures easy start-up and the easy aimer simplifies orientation for optimum signal reception. Additionally, transmitters can be positioned relative to the slope surface of the material, improving the quality of the reflected signal. Ample room for wiring and rugged screw terminals allow fast and easy installation. The infrared handheld programmer is non-intrusive, allowing the device to be programmed without opening any covers. Measurement accuracy over a wide temperature range is achievable. Process temperatures at the horn up to 200°C can be accommodated. An optional self-cleaning purge connection and dust covers are available, which prevent degradation due to material build-up inside the antenna.
The quick start wizard can be enabled locally through the standard user interface or remotely via Simatic PDM. The result is fast, reliable and continuous measurement of material during discharge, filling or static conditions.
