Modern conveyor systems provide the ability to move hot and unstable product from one area to another. The introduction of belting with extended temperature capabilities has increased the need to monitor the temperature of hot materials under conveyance. Belt damage is one matter, the impact of the hot substance at delivery must also be considered.
Contact probes such as thermocouples are not suited to this type of application due to drag and static generation. The thermal time constants associated with contact devices are also problematic. Slow response times allow large volumes of dangerous product to flow past the detector before an alarm can be generated.
A possible solution is the use of non-contact infrared thermometers. New innovations have reduced cost, increased reliability and resulted in sensors that offer greater accuracy.
The advantages of non-contact temperature measurement are:
* Fast response to temperature change.
* Hot-spot detection in moving product.
* Non-contact with corrosive substances.
* Measurement range from -50 and 3000°C.
The Raytek TXS smart sensor is designed for use with open conveyors
An innovation in infrared technology is the Raytek TXS sensor. The device can be adjusted remotely using the HART protocol without process interruption. The system is widely used on coal and coke conveyors with an air purge collar for optical cleansing.
