NewElec's N and MA motor protection relays provide earth leakage protection with a sensitivity threshold of 250 mA with a trip delay of 100 ms. In the case of the MA relay, the sensing threshold is programmable from 50 mA to 1 A whilst trip delays may be user selectable from 100 ms to 1 second. In the case of the MA relay the design incorporates harmonic filtering to overcome the effects of nuisance trips associated with starting large kW machines by direct on-line methods or when using variable speed drives.
The N and MA protection relays
In order to address concerns relating to possible failure of the main contactor while in the process of interrupting a high energy fault, these NewElec relays automatically co-ordinate the tripping circuit in a manner that facilitates the back tripping of a circuit breaker by means of a shunt when a possible high energy fault is identified by the protection relay. This eliminates the effect of the contactor acting as the circuit breaker.
