Starting an electrical machine that has been standing for a long period of time is risky and should be avoided until the insulation level of the motor has been found acceptable. This could be as a result of moisture ingress in long standing motors typically found on plants that work seasonally or in applications where there is a high degree of water contamination.
The EC/ED relay, available from NewElec, solves this problem by monitoring the insulation integrity of the motor windings and feeder cable cores to earth while the motor is standing. In essence the main contactor will be prevented from closing into a circuit in which the insulation level to earth has deteriorated to an unacceptable level.
EC relay with lock-out
Included in the protection package are the relay, an 11-pin plug-in base and a three-phase choke. The product may be used regardless of the starter configuration.
The lock-out relay determines the acceptable insulation level, while the fused measuring circuit protects the relay against inadvertent damage due to incorrect connections. Compact in design, the EC/ED is suitable for installation in flameproof enclosures. The relay may be used on both cables and motors starting direct on line or star delta.
