Level switch prevents spillages

November 2007 Level Measurement & Control

Pollution caused by the inadequate storage of oil in above ground tank installations can result in expensive consequences, with the cost of spillage clean-ups ranging between R100 000 and R2,5 million. This makes a 'prevention is better than a cure' approach the obvious choice.

Endress+Hauser's Liquiphant M vibrating level switch provides a cost-effective and reliable solution for pollution prevention in oil storage tanks. The switch comes standard with both high and low level alarm functions and a unique fork corrosion monitoring system, which enables instant problem notification. The switch is ATEX certified (EEx ia and EEx d) for hazardous area use and also complies with IEC61508 with a SIL2/3 rating.

Liquiphant M offers maintenance-free operation and is unaffected by air bubbles, turbulence, foam, vibration or build-up. A wide choice of wetted parts, including five different coatings, ensures reliability even under aggressive conditions and its 19 mm fork means it is ideal for applications where space is at a premium.

In England, the safe storage of oil is strictly enforced under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001. The regulations apply to industrial, commercial and institutional sites storing more than 200 litres of oil, such as diesel or lubricant storage.

This level switch has been successfully implemented to ensure that user's oil storage facilities comply with every letter of the law, including overfill prevention, oil quantity measurement via electronic gauges and efficient high level alarms.
