A local steel manufacturing company recently commissioned a 1400 kW, 6,6 kV motor utilising NewElec's 327 M electronic motor protection relay. The 327 M relay was selected due to the facility provided for shifting the standard trip curve to permit high inrush currents to be present for up to 84 s when starting high inertia loads. When set to coincide with the safe hot stall time of the motor this also protects the motor against locked rotor conditions on start-up. Once the motor has reached full operating speed, the relay places the standard trip curve back in the initial position.
NewElec’s 327M protection relay can shift the standard trip curve to permit high inrush currents at motor start
Full protection against overloading, phase unbalance, short circuit faults and earth faults is provided, and the relay may be configured to permit only one, two, or three consecutive start attempts.
The 327 M relay is auxiliary supply dip-proofed for a full second and consistently monitors thermal capacity which is memorised even if the power supply is removed. It can assist maintenance personnel in identifying fault problems by means of control panel mounted LEDs.
Typically, the 327 M relay is ideal for hard working motors. These include motors running constantly at full load, motors driving crushers, ball mills, motors connected to high inertia loads and motors with long run-up starting times.
