Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Tank blanketing one-device solution

February 2001 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Tank blanketing is the injection of a gas into the vapour space of a liquid storage tank. This is done to maintain a blanket of gas above the stored liquid to prevent atmospheric air entering the tank which could cause internal tank corrosion or degradation of the stored product. It also can be used to prevent the collapse of the tank from a vacuum being created during pump-out. The blanketing valve can only replace lost pressure; it cannot relieve excess pressure which must then be vented through a pilot-operated vent valve. A complete package is available from Mitech with the gas-blanketing valve for maintaining pressure and relief valve for venting.

Cashco's Vacu-Gard is not a modified regulator. It is a single valve system, specifically designed for tank blanket applications. The advantage is that the pressure can be maintained more accurately than with a standard regulator which results in cost saving in gas supply and tank construction. Due to its angle pattern and compact design it can be directly installed onto the tank nozzle reducing the number of necessary connections and possible leak points. The overall weight of Vacu-Gard is less than most conventional valve systems making it easier for insulation and will place less stress on the tank roof. Once installed in the field it is serviceable without removing it from the tank due to its top entry design.

It is a pilot-operated valve - when the tank pressure falls below the set pressure, the valve opens and allows sufficient blanket gas into the tank to bring the pressure back to the valve set pressure. Soft seats and seals are used to assure tightness in shutoff when the correct pressure is reached. The use of a blanketing valve can be cost saving as the immediate outlay will be less than other systems and the cost of ownership is low. Mitech is the local agent for Cashco.
