Sealed vision sensors for harsh environments

October 2007 Sensors & Transducers

The PresencePLUS Pro vision sensor, from Banner Engineering, features a compact, metal, IP68-rated camera, with the option of an integrated light or lens cover. The sealed, IP68-rated sensor performs advanced machine vision inspections in challenging industrial and washdown environments.

“Our IP68-rated vision cameras allow them to be located anywhere that water, dust and other contaminants might normally be a problem for general vision products,” said Dan Holste, director for Banner vision sensors. “Pair the camera with one of our powerful controllers featuring a comprehensive suite of inspection tools and you have an easy-to-apply, vision inspection solution of extraordinary sophistication for significantly less than comparable systems.”

The rugged camera is designed for use in dirty industrial environments including automotive, assembly, printing, food handling and packaging. Examples include the following:

* 360° geometric fixture-free inspection.

* Error proofing.

* Assembly verification.

* Fast pattern presence/absence recognition.

* Flaw detection.

* Orientation confirmation.

* Sealed cap and flap verification.

* Fill level detection.

* 2D and 1D bar code reading.

* Colour verification and matching.

The device incorporates a remote camera with a controller. All controllers feature a suite of grey scale tools – including Locate, Pattern Find and Count, Geometric Find and Count, Edge, Object, Blob and Average Grey Scale – that deliver precision and versatility in demanding inspection applications. Colour models also offer the Colour Match tool to inspect for a specific colour or colour range taught to the sensor. Several features of the Pro make it particularly easy to set up and operate:

* Compact camera with separate DIN-mountable controller.

* Convenient 20-pin removable terminal block.

* Universal PresencePLUS software with three-step point-and-click setup.

* Ethernet, serial and flexible discrete I/O in the same full-featured sensor.

* Direct connectivity to EtherNet/IP and ModbusTCP industrial networks.

* ActiveX utilities for exporting inspections, images and results.

* Live video without a PC.

* Remote TEACH.

* 14 configurable discrete I/O (NPN/PNP).

* A complete selection of lenses, lighting, brackets and accessories.

* 10 to 30 V d.c. operation.

The P4 AREA, P4 GEO, P4 EDGE and P4 BCR dedicated-function sensors offer specific tools for solving the most common inspection challenges. PresencePLUS vision sensor products share a user interface that is available in nine languages: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. This intuitive interface permits operators with only basic computer skills to easily set up an inspection.
