Switched mode power for PLCs

October 2007 Electrical Power & Protection

Phaseo switch mode power supplies from Schneider Electric deliver the DC power necessary for PLCs and other automation system control circuits. Modular and universal for common applications, they are complemented by the AS-Interface range for the AS-Interface cabling system and the dedicated range for repetitive machines.

The Phaseo Modular range caters for the needs of simple automation systems in the range 7 to 60 W, with output voltages of 5, 12 or 24 V. Its compact size makes it suitable for use with a modular panel and cabinet rail mounting. The choice of top or bottom wiring (except for the ABL 7RM24025) makes it an easy product to integrate, with direct mounting in a panel using two retractable lugs.

The Phaseo Optimum range offers a low cost solution for 12, 24 or 48 V applications requiring currents between 3 and 5 A. The Optimum Range can guarantee the PLC logic states until an overload situation occurs. At this point the power supply protection trips, only restoring itself once the fault has been identified and rectified. (Note that not all Optimum range feature power factor correction.)

The Phaseo Universal range covers ratings from 72 to 960 W at 24 V. This range is easily adaptable to suit power distribution systems across the globe and can be connected to phase-to-neutral (N-L1) or phase-to-phase for line supplies with a nominal range extending from 100 to 500 V. It offers diagnostic functions be it local or remote, user choice of operating mode in case of overload by either current limiting or stop.

Function modules ensure service continuity with buffer module and battery check modules to protect against prolonged outages or microbreaks. The redundancy module ensures paralleling and redundancy functions while the discriminating electronic downstream protection modules ensure protection against application overloads.

The power reserve, or boost function, absorbs the transient current peaks and the range complies to standard EN 61000-3-2 (through the incorporation of a power factor correction input filter whose function is to reduce harmonic pollution across the entire range).

The Phaseo AS-Interface range covers power ratings from 72 to 144 W at 30 V and the Phaseo Dedicated range is designed to deliver from 60 to 240 W, also at 30 V, catering for commercial and standard catalogue machines.
