Radio module has long range

September 2007 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

The unidirectional 'Europipe' outdoor radio module, a new member of Phoenix Contact's RAD-Line I/O product family, can transmit two digital signals and one standard analog signal (4-20 mA) over distances up to three kilometres. Thanks to protection class IP65, the modules can be installed outdoors without additional switching cabinets, and they can easily be integrated with existing RAD-Line I/O products. The Trusted Wireless system, an industrial radio concept based on frequency hopping (FHSS), ensures the reliable transmission of all process data.

The devices are easy to install and bring into operation. Wiring is uncomplicated thanks to the M12 connection system, and the modules are simply switched on to establish the radio connection. No programming or configuration is required. The sender and receiver modules offer a range of different supply voltages from internally powered 230 V a.c. or external 24 V d.c. modules which feature a range of economy modes so they can be powered by batteries or solar power. This makes them suitable for use in self-sufficient systems.

Thanks to the unidirectional radio system, point-to-point connections as well as multiple receiver systems can be used to multiply and distribute signals. Comprehensive accessories - ranging from surge voltage protection to an array antenna - provide added security and enable transmission distances up to several kilometres. The certification given in accordance with directive 94/9/EC (ATEX) and IECEx ensures that unidirectional RAD-ISM-2400 wireless systems can be employed internationally in Ex Zone 2 environments.
