Loop-powered inline ultrasonic flowmeter

September 2007 Flow Measurement & Control

The Prosonic Flow 92F is a state-of-the-art addition to Endress+Hauser's range of ultrasonic flowmeters. The company claims that it is the world's first 2-wire loop-powered inline ultrasonic flowmeter. The multibeam ultrasonic inline sensor offers easy electrical and mechanical installation, with minimal space usage and high accuracy performance.

The new flowmeter extends the application range of electromagnetic flowmeters and is ideal for both process and utility applications, especially in the chemical industry. It is suitable for use with non-conductive and conductive liquids.

The transmitter is available in three output versions: 4-20 mA HART, 4-20 mA HART with additional status/pulse output and Profibus PA.

Device type management (DTM) software and field device tool (FDT) technology support system integration and the transmitter requires virtually no programming during the initial setup. Only the actual flow range has to be defined. Software independent data management is made possible via a HistoROM/T-DAT function allowing transmitter setup and sensor calibration data to be stored as a backup.

The Prosonic Flow F sensor is a multibeam sensor that consists of a stainless steel sensor body, flanged process connections and 2, 3 or 4 pairs of ultrasonic sensors. The sensor pairs are located in two arrays on each side of the sensor body at an angle symmetrically around the sensor body axis. The ultrasonic sensors are welded into the sensor body removing the requirement for additional process gaskets.

The physical arrangement of the ultrasonic sensors ensures optimal scanning of flow velocity distribution in the measuring section of the sensor. This in turn reduces the requirement for upstream straight pipe to less than five times the pipe diameter.

The flowmeter offers high accuracy (better than 0,5% optional 0,3%) and enables cost-effective non-invasive flow measurement, with no mechanical interaction with the flow. This makes it practically maintenance free.
