Radar level transmitter incorporates advanced signal processing

August 2007 Level Measurement & Control

The new Sitrans LR250 radar level transmitter from Siemens Automation and Drives incorporates the company's 'Process Intelligence' advanced signal processing. The compact plug-and-play 25 GHz 2-wire device is easy to install and quick to configure. It has been designed to accurately and reliably measure the level of liquids or slurries. The transmitter can be used in general applications, but is also suitable for chemical, pharmaceutical and hydrocarbon processing applications, including those in corrosive environments.

The transmitter design incorporates a compact horn that allows installation in small openings. The concentrated high frequency beam ensures interference from vessel walls is minimal. A high frequency and narrow transmission pulse means the complete vessel capacity can be measured.

The multilingual Quick Start Wizard guides users to program the transmitter using only a few parameters. The transmitter can be programmed via the intrinsically safe infrared handheld programmer or remotely using Simatic PDM without opening the cover of the device, thus preventing exposure of the electronics to aggressive atmospheres. The built-in graphical local user interface displays echo profiles and diagnostic information, allowing the user to determine tank dynamics at a glance. Integral self-diagnostic features are communicated to the local display and across networks.

The 'Process Intelligence' signal processing evaluates dynamic echo signals. It applies algorithms (based on field data collected from over one million level measurement applications) to raw echoes to produce accurate and reliable level measurement readings. The processor can automatically ignore obstructions and is behind the more advanced features such as diagnostic tools, Quick Start Wizard and automatic false-echo suppression. It also contains a new algorithm that improves the low level measurement accuracy in vessels containing low dielectric media.
