The Telco Belt Monitoring Unit (BMU) has been designed to effectively monitor conveyors, prevent further damage on belt failure and minimise the resulting expense of such incidents. Gail Norton, MD of Gail Norton Instrumentation says: "Ordinary belt monitoring units can detect belt failure but are maintenance intensive. The Telco solution virtually eliminates maintenance and is easy to test."
Telco 3-channel belt monitoring system
The BMU uses Telco infrared sensors to monitor the belt position at all times. These robust infrared sensors are well-suited to environments such as those found in coal-mining as they are unaffected by sunlight, water, dust and dirt.
The unit can be installed in various configurations depending on the customer's needs. The basic system detects belt tear in the centre of the belt only while the more advanced option detects both belt tear and misalignment.
The system can be equipped with an alarm indication only or with 10 A rated voltage free contacts to facilitate integration with motor control, PLC or scada systems. For safety considerations the system is designed to stop the conveyor if a power failure or system failure occurs. Power supply requirements are 24 V d.c. or 24/110/220 V a.c.
The frame of the BMU is made from pipe bent into a U-shape to fit around the conveyor. There are no sharp edges that can damage the conveyor. The pipes are powder coated and can be supplied in various colours.
An infrared transmitter and an infrared receiver pair are fitted on the frames on each side of the conveyor. These can be doubled up for even more protection if required. The amplifier and associated relays are mounted remotely in an IP65 enclosure away from the sensors. This amplifier can be configured to provide a delay to filter out unwanted trips.
