Sustain 2007 goes green

Focusing on energy, earth and air, and incorporating Afriwater, Sustain 2007 takes place from 15-17 August at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Amatola Independent Power Producers (Amatola) will be providing green power for the inaugural Sustain 2007 exhibition. The company is an electricity trading company, which specialises in selling electricity generated from a renewable energy (RE) source, via the national grid using existing infrastructure.
Explains Len van Wyk, managing director of Amatola: "Our trading model gives electricity consumers access to RE, and for the first time, the potential customer has a choice of purchasing 'green' electricity to demonstrate support for initiatives to restore and keep our environment clean."
Green power is the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources, such as sugar cane fibrous matter (known as bagasse), wind and solar generated power.
Amatola provides consulting and project management services in RE and already has its first two suppliers, Tongaat Hulett Sugar and TSB, which sell their surplus electricity generated from the burning of bagasse. The company supplies electricity to the Buffalo City Municipality in East London and the City of Tshwane as well as customers such as Daimler Chrysler.
Sustain 2007 will showcase technologies, products and services that can play a role in protecting the environment while reducing energy consumption and supporting sustainable economic development. It will also present new methods to combat the detrimental effects of wastage and pollution.
